Back to work…

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Since the oil spill, I’ve found it increasingly hard to be creative and work. Many of you know that all my inspiration comes from the beauty that surrounds Northwest Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. The images of the oiled sea life, birds and beaches has been very difficult for me to deal with. I feel like the love of my life is being taken from me and I can do nothing but watch. It is very, very sad and disheartening.

My family and I had planned our vacation for June 4th in Destin, Florida many months ago. We were very blessed and arrived there to find paradise still existed. The waters were still crystal clear blue and the sand sugar white. Everything was just as I had left it in April. Breathtaking, serene and now a little surreal. Helicopters were flying down the coastline looking for oil. The dolphins were swimming closer to shore than usual. The streets and beaches weren’t as crowded as normal. You could feel the anxiety and sadness in the air. Everyone was going about their business, but everyone knew the oil was just miles from the beach.

We were fortunate and never saw any dead animals, tar balls or oil sheen. We did see the fishing fleet leave the harbor every morning. We did see the most incredible blue water that draws you in. We sat in sand so white it blinds you. We did vow never to abandon the Emerald Coast, oil or no oil. My family will be back to the Emerald Coast soon. Our entire family has decided that it is our home and we will be relocating there within the year.  We all feel incredible joy that we have found our place in the world, but intense sorrow for what is on the horizon for the most beautiful place on Earth.

These next two pieces of jewelry are what I’ve created this week. I hope my love for the Emerald Coast still shows in my work.

Sea Turtles

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

I’ve heard a lot about the poor sea turtles in the Gulf this past week. Many are dying from unknown causes. It is heartbreaking that these innocent animals are paying the price for mans stupidity. I wanted to create a necklace that showcased some of the colors these beautiful animals possess. I put this necklace together today from the bead I made to celebrate the sea turtle.

It’s that time of the day…

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

It’s that time of the day when my heart just aches to be sitting on the beach watching the sun start to set. There is nothing more beautiful than the vibrant orange ball in the sky shimmering in the crystal blue waters. Mother Nature gives us extraordinary color combinations. I stole one for the necklace I created today. Shimmering crystal blue with vibrant orange. I hope you like it!!

Something new and blue…

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

When I was a little girl I was surrounded by blue. Blue everything. My mother loved blue. Our house had blue walls, blue carpet, blue furniture, blue drapes…blue, blue, blue. I grew up hating blue. I vowed I would NEVER have the color blue anywhere in my life. Never say never, now I love blue.

Ever since my trip to the Emerald Coast of Florida I haven’t been able to get enough blue in my life. Now, mind you it’s not just any shade of blue. It has to be crystal clear, aqua blue just like the water of Destin.  The necklace I created for today is that beautiful crystal clear aqua blue. It sparkles and shines in the sun just like the dancing water in the East Pass of Destin.

The Oil spill….

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

The oil spill has been on my mind now for days. I can’t quit thinking about the devastation it will bring to all the animals, the beaches, and the beautiful emerald green waters on the Emerald Coast. Please help with this disaster where you can. We need to all come together to fight this one.

Yesterday, when I went to the studio to create I wanted to do something a little different. Usually, blues, greens and purples are my first choices in glass colors. But yesterday, pink was the color I went for first. Today, when I took the bead out of the kiln I knew it had to be called “Pink Flamingo”.

My process…

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

I had a friend the other day that made a comment that made me think. She said she thought I might be giving some people the impression that I can whip out a piece of jewelry using my handmade glass beads in a few minutes. Her comment came after I had posted a necklace that I named after seeing a post about the Eden Gardens outside of Destin, Florida. The day before I had made a beautiful encased floral bead. I made it because I was thinking about all the lush flowers and greenery that surround my favorite place in the world, Destin. It just so happens the next day another friend of mine posted a blurb about the Eden State Gardens. I thought to myself what a perfect name for the necklace I just made using the floral focal bead.

I don’t want anyone to get the impression that I just whip anything out in a few minutes. It doesn’t work that way, so I thought I would give you some insight into what I do and my process. Every day I have images of things I have seen running through my head. Most of the time those images are related to the ocean or the Emerald Coast of Florida. I’m constantly trying to recreate those memories in the jewelry I make. At night while I’m trying to sleep different ideas pop into my head. It’s a never ending thing with me. I can’t keep those beautiful sights, sounds and memories from flooding my brain. So each time I sit down at the torch to create a bead to incorporate into a design I have in my head I have plenty of  ideas to pull from. That is the easy part.

Just because I have these beautiful sights and sounds in my head doesn’t mean when I sit down at the torch they just happen. Sometimes it takes hours and hours of work to get one single bead that I believe speaks and has purpose. I can’t and won’t put just any bead I make into my designs. In fact, I have several boxes of beads that I will never use in my designs because I don’t feel they send the message I want them to send. Everything, and I mean everything about the bead has to be just right or it’s not going into anything I do. I sell those beads that don’t work for me and my designs to other designers. There are some days I can’t create anything that tells my story. Those days are very frustrating for me. Too many of those days in a row and I can get real cranky :).

When I do make that special bead that speaks to me I have to find the right components to pair it with. Since I love the ocean so much I use a lot of pearls. I love their luster and how they feel against the skin. I also use a lot of copper in my designs. I guess in some ways I’m a little rebellious. I like to step out and be different. For the past several years sterling silver has flooded the markets and I’ve become bored with it.  I made a decision to use copper in many of my pieces because I love the patina and the market isn’t flooded with it.

My style of jewelry is what I call statement pieces.  I want my handmade glass bead to be the star of the show. I don’t want to complicate the design with tons of extra things that aren’t needed. I want pieces of jewelry that capture the beauty of the glass and my dreams. I don’t like overcomplicated jewelry. My jewelry is made to be worn at all times with everything in your closet. Casual or  formal my pieces are always just right. Because I choose to let the handcrafted glass be the star of the show my designs will always be in style and on trend. Each piece I design makes a statement and its the ONLY one in the world that makes that statement!

I hope this gives everyone more insight into what I do and why I do it. If I could just whip out jewelry I wouldn’t be doing it. I don’t want to be a production worker. I want to be what I am….a free spirit glass artist putting her memories and dreams into beautiful one of a kind pieces that make a statement about you and me.

Now after saying all of this, here is what I created today. This bead was made two days ago. The wind was blowing and images of seaweed dancing in the water kept popping into my head. The fronds of silver infused glass that flow from the bottom of the bead is my subtle interpretation of seaweed. I hope you like it.

I went to the movies…

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

I ventured out the other night to go see the new Disney movie “Oceans”. I know, I know, who would have guessed??? Ok, I’m hopelessly in love with the ocean and all it contains. I can’t help myself. I came by it honestly. That is if you believe in astrology. I was born in July and I am the ultimate “Crab”! It’s really amazing how well our astrological signs relate to who we really are. Mine hits me on the head. BONG…..lol. I’m really glad I was born as a crab. It suits me perfectly. I can’t imagine being any other way.

The next day after the movie I went out to the studio to work on my next ocean inspired necklace. Squid Ink is what transpired. I love the dark ink blue dichroic background in this bead. All the silver infused goodies I put on top of the dichro look like sea life of one sort or another. I surrounded my Squid Ink with mother of pearl chunky daggers and there you have my next ocean inpsired necklace :)

Spring gardens…

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

It was a beautiful day here in Texas. We finally got some sunshine and the temperatures were in the 80′s. Usually this time of the year you will find me buying tons of plants for my porch. This year though its different. I can’t bring myself to buy anything because I’m moving to Florida. No, I can’t tell you when or how, but I’m moving. I’m trying to downsize everything so my move won’t be such a big one. So no new plants for me :(

The good thing is when I get to Florida I will have a whole new selection of plants to choose from. I am going to have to educate myself about their native plants and what thrives and what will die…lol. I can’t wait. Since I was in the gardening state of mind today I created this beautiful encased floral necklace to celebrate the Eden Gardens State Park outside of Destin, Fl. It is an amazing place to visit if you love beautiful gardens.

Crab Island….

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Every morning before I do anything else I read my favorite blogs about Destin. This morning I came across a new blog about “Crab Island”. Crab Island is around the corner from the harbor in Destin. It’s a beautiful place where the water is the most amazing color and crystal clear. When you cross the Destin bridge you can look over and see tons of boats anchored there having boat parties. It is such a popular place they have waterside service with drinks and food delivered right to your boat. You will frequently see and hear bands playing on floating pontoons converted to stages. It is just an awesome place to go and celebrate life.

When I was deciding what to make with my newest bead I was thinking of all the fun everyone must be having there today. Dancing and laughing and all the brightly colored clothing swaying in the wind. These images in my head were brought to life in my newest necklace “Island Party”.  I hope you like it.
